Why We Play

If soccer is just a game, why is it so important to us? Like many other sports it is fast and physically demanding. At times the play can be sloppy, and other times, it can be dramatic and beautiful. The sport only goes beyond being just a game when parents, players and coaches decide that it will.

The game is taken to the Next Level when the players decide that they feel there is more to be achieved. This happens when they decide that they want to be a better player or learn new skills. Their decision will mean years of dedicated and focused work.

The game helps players learn the meaning of character and learn what it means to act with integrity. They learn that games are won through their dedication to improve and their hard efforts on the field. They will see how everything they do on the field affects the entire group, and how every action has a consequence. Ultimately, what they learn will transcend the sport and carry over into the rest of their lives, as they will one day build families, communities
and careers.

Soccer is a game that over time will reward the individual, who with focused practice, can move past the simple joys of competition, and move into the realm of mastery. Mastery also means humility: the player knowing there is always more to learn, improvement is a never ending process, and there is always someone better than
they are.

For those who are willing, there are many rewards to be found in the game. Players dedicated to their training and teammates, and who can, as a result, bring those hard earned skills to the field on game day, will experience many important truths about life and about themselves. It is a gift to know ones limits and capabilities, and a greater gift to know what it means to realize ones potential.

The elements of the game, such as the ball, field, and opposition, all help players express their creativity. This
is why soccer is known as the beautiful game.
