WHAT IS SPD?
SABA PLAYER DEVELOPMENT (SPD)
SPD is a cost free initiative that sets the foundation for youth soccer development in the metropolitan New York and Tri-State region. Focused on elite level youth ages 9-13, SPD is not a club. It is a program structured to offer selected players a unique training environment, high quality games, and specialized travel opportunities. SPD operates on the “Club Neutral” model where players remain with their club teams and augment their club training and games with SPD training and competitions. By aggregating the top players from the region, SPD allows for an efficient and intense learning environment for talented youth.
TEAMS
In less then one year, SPD has grown tremendously from the initial SPD10 Squad in Spring 2011. Currently, there are SPD 9, SPD 10, SPD 11, and SPD12 squads competing in the region's top tournaments and traveling to Amsterdam and London in 2012.
OBJECTIVES FOR PLAYERS IN SPD
The aim is to further develop talented youth of the region in conjunction with their regular club teams. SPD training will focus on advanced individual technique and team play that may not be plausible at the travel team level. Based on the 'total football' concept, this technical training, coupled with exposure to higher-level competition, will provide the environment necessary for the continued development. SPD's intention is to put individual players on a platform to be assessed by youth, college, and pro evaluators/scouts, both in the United States and abroad.
SPD PLAYERS
Selected players recommended by club coaches, scouts and parents would be invited to an SPD training session. These players should be highly motivated and display advanced technical ability. After an initial training session, selected players will be invited to continue training with SPD. Not all players who train at SPD will be selected to travel with the team to tournaments and on tours. The SPD coaching staff will select players who will travel to tournaments and tours. To be eligible for tournaments and tours, players must be part of the SPD program and be regular participants at SPD training.
COMMITMENT LEVEL
SPD will require a high level of dedication for participating players and their parents. SPD will communicate directly with parents about player commitments, development, and expectations. SPD is developing a player evaluation system that will assist players and parents to set goals and monitor skill progress.
COACHING STAFF
The SPD coaching staff will be headed by Harry Triana, the founder of SABA (Soccer at Its Best Academy). Harry is a nationally recognized coach and former
professional player. He holds the USSF NATIONAL YOUTH, NSCAA IN PREMIERE (obtained at Club Paranaense, Brazil), and WEST HAM UNITED INTERNATIONAL license.
