WHAT IS SPD?
SABA PLAYER DEVELOPMENT (SPD)
SABA Player Development (SPD) is an initiative created to help identify and develop elite youth soccer talent from the Metropolitan New York area. Invited youth will have the opportunity to augment their regular travel team training with a once a week elite training program and participate with SPD teams in top flight domestic and international tournaments and team tours. SPD will not conflict with players current youth clubs but instead was created to offer deeper technical focus by aggregating the regions top players.
TEAMS
Currently, SPD 10 (U10) and SPD12 (U12) teams are being formed for commencement in March of 2011.
OBJECTIVES FOR PLAYERS IN SPD The aim is to further develop talented youth of the region in conjunction with their regular club teams. SPD training will focus on advanced individual technique and team play that may not be plausible at the travel team level. Based on the 'total football' concept, this technical training, coupled with exposure to higher-level competition, will provide the environment necessary for the continued development. SPD's intention is to put individual players on a platform to be assessed by youth, college, and pro evaluators/scouts, both in the United States and abroad.
SPD PLAYERS
Selected players recommended by club coaches, scouts and parents would be
invited to an SPD training session. These players should be highly motivated and display advanced technical ability. After an initial training session, selected players will be invited to continue training with SPD. Not all players who train at SPD will be selected to travel with the team to tournaments and on tours. The SPD coaching staff will select players who will travel to tournaments and tours. To be eligible for tournaments and tours, players must part of the SPD program and be regular participants at SPD training.
PRACTICE DAYS & TOURNAMENTS
SPD 's aim is not to create conflicts with a players current travel team. Practices
will be held once a week and tournaments and tours will occur over school
holidays, occasional weekends and the summer vacation. SPD will work to avoid
any conflict with players' regular travel team schedules.
COMMITMENT LEVEL
SPD will require a high level of dedication for participating players and their parents. SPD will communicate directly with parents about player commitments, development, and expectations. SPD is developing a player evaluation system that will assist players and parents to set goals and monitor skill progress.
COACHING STAFF
The SPD coaching staff will be headed by Harry Triana, the founder of SABA (Soccer at Its Best Academy). Harry is a nationally recognized coach and former
professional player. He holds the USSF NATIONAL YOUTH, NSCAA IN PREMIERE (obtained at Club Paranaense, Brazil), and WEST HAM UNITED INTERNATIONAL license.
TRAINING COSTS
There are no costs for the once a week training sessions.
TOURNAMENT / TOUR COSTS
Tournament and tour fees will vary depending on the event but will be the responsibility of parents.
UPCOMING 2011 TOURNAMENTS AND TOURS
The first tournament for the SPD team will be the Jefferson Cup hosted by the Richmond Strikers. This is the top rated youth tournament on the East Coast.
The tournament runs from March 11-13th in Richmond, Virginia.
This spring, the SPD teams will aim to participate in the Easter Cup in Harlem
(Netherlands) in conjunction with a training tour at Ajax Amsterdam. The Easter
tournament and the Ajax Academy are Europe's premier training ground for
young talent. Over the summer, SPD teams will participate in an elite national tournament and a South American training tour. In the fall, SPD teams will attend a national elite tournament and embark on a UK tour to West Ham United and Leicester City over Thanksgiving. We look forward to a successful and exciting 2011 SPD initiative.
